Newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times or the Chicago Tribune which have been around for over 100 years (just to name a couple) seem like they're old newspapers to us. There are numerous other newspapers around that continue to entertain the world and keep them informed on current events.
Many of these old newspapers also now have online versions of their paper as a way to keep up with the ever popularity of the internet.
What many of us don't realize is the many interesting facts that can be found in old newspapers. At the time the newspapers were written, they obviously were not considered as old newspapers and their readers probably didn't consider the content of the newspapers as all that interesting.
Today, however, when we get the opportunity to view these old newspapers, we can fully appreciate the way things were back then.
Some of the interesting things that can be found in old newspapers may include:
• Obituaries, Births, Tax Notices or Marriage Announcements as they appeared in the newspaper at the time.
• Advertisements next to the articles, which tell us something about the tastes and preferences of that time.
• The opportunity to read about historical events as they were actually reported as happening as opposed to it being altered through the years.
• World events dating as far back as the 1600s and 1700s.
• "Society" pages as they were actually written years ago.
There are many other things that can be found in the many old newspapers that can be found in many archives. There are actually more than 5 million pages of newspapers in the archives to be viewed, with papers from almost all 50 of the states. This is a great way to learn about your ancestors and if they made the news and why.
Many major newspaper offices offer libraries and archives where you can retrieve these old newspapers in an index search using titles, dates or keyword searches. You'd be amazed at some of the interesting articles that can be found in these old newspapers.
One of the oldest newspapers still around is the London Gazette. Many viewers have checking into purchasing their older copies.
Many copies of old newspapers of your choice can be purchased either online or through the newspapers' archive section. Regardless of where you live, there is bound to be an old newspaper somewhere that will tell you news about some old ancestor you never knew much about.
